Preparing for the Loss of Your Pet

Saying Goodbye with Love, Dignity, & Peace of Mind

by Myra Milani, DVM

ISBN 0-7615-1648-4

reviewed by Pam Green

Just about anything by Dr Miliani is worth reading , with her masterpiece "DogSmart" (which I reviewed a year or so ago) being absoutely MUST read for anyone prior to making decision to share life with a dog. This present book is highly recommended to all who have a dog or other pet as it contains extremely valuable preparation for all manner of pet loss, including loss from pet dissappearance (ie lost in the ordinary sense of the word) or from owner relinquishment, as well as the inevitable losses from various forms of death. This is a workbook for your working thru all the psychological things that you may find yourself expereinceing. Miliani's main thesis is that preparation takes the worst of the fear out of any undesirable event and makes you better able to cope. She continually espouses the view that it is easier to prepare yourself ahead of time for making difficult decisions, than to wait until you are faced with a crisis and need for immediate decision. My own personal temperament and philosoply are very much in accord.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has been bereaved and to ayone who will be so at some unknown time in the future. That means all of us.
