I wrote this a few days after a friend's beloved old dog, terminally ill with liver cancer, had passed away peacefully asleep at her side without waking her. At the time, my precious Bones had been living with cancer for many months, and, although he was still feeling quite well, I knew the time was coming when I would go to bed with him beside me wondering if he would wake up with me next morning.

O, pray I shall see, by next dawn's early light,
Sleeping safe at my side since the twilight's last gleaming,
My beloved old friend, through all perils of life
Sharing sorrows and joys, giving total devotion;
May his snore in my ear, his warm body so near,
Give me proof through this night that his soul is still here.
O, pray that my precious old dog still shall breathe,
Whom my heart shall ne'er forget nor my spirit deceive !
