A love song about euthanasia.

We who love our dogs have the precious priviledge and the sacred duty to ensure that our beloved dogs can have a peaceful and pain free and fear free escape from what would otherwise be a suffering or tormented final period in their lives. I do consider euthanasia under such circumstances to be a Sacrament. It is the final gift of love. It is the most precious gift you can give, and the most expensive one because you pay for it with your heart.

I actually wrote this when Chelsea was still in full flower of her maturity and Bones was not yet fully adult. I was driving back from a Trial in Los Angeles and had visited with my much loved Grandfather who was then a bit past his 90th birthday and was noticably failing in health and beginning to suffer. Although I did not consiously know it at the time, I think to some degree I may have been writing it for him as well as for the still distant future of my adored dogs. In fact he died shortly after this visit.

BOUVIER REQUIEM

(to tune of "Yesterday", Lennon & McCartney)

by Pam Green , © 1990

Bouvier,
How it seems like only yesterday,
You were just a fluffy pup at play,
Oh, I believed in Bouvier !

Recently,
You're not quite the dog you used to be;
There's a shadow hanging over me
Of Bouvier mortality.

       You were young and bold,
       Now you're old and getting grey.
       But you're still my best friend;
       I depend on Bouvier !

Little Bear,
You're the one for whom I'll always care.
Though Kipling warned me that I should beware,
I've given you my heart to tear !

Trust in me,
That, in loving you unselfishly,
I can find the grace to set you free
And ease you to Eternity.

Bouvier,
We've some good times left to share, I pray:
May that final day be far away
When I must grieve for Bouvier !
        I believe in Bouvier !
