The "Delta" breeze, coming from the south or southwest, is what makes summer in Davis endurable. Whenever a "high" off-shore blocks this, the whole Central Valley becomes much hotter and over a week can become deadly.
My century old farmhouse is sited so the bedroom windows face south, thus making maximum use of the beneficent Delta breeze.
