Young Bouvier being started on ducks using a round pen.
This photo shows a young Bouvier, "Gaston", being introduced to herding by the method of ducks in a round pen. The ducks are inside the pen and the dog is on the outside. The handler uses a pole and a long line to guide the dog into correct movements. Pole and line encourage the dog to flank around the pen so that the dog is about 180 degrees opposite to the handler, with the ducks in the middle. The line can also be used to halt the dog at the balance point, opposite the handler. Although the fence is low enough that the dog could hop over it, the handler will rebuke any efforts to do so. Thus this is the first lesson in self control for the dog. This young dog is very interested and showed good instinct to keep moving himself to be in balance with the handler.
