I was thinking about doing a portrait of the pair of friends for whom I'd painted "One Morning In Macedon" as a 20th anniversary present. I have a matching canvas. My initial vision was as described to one of them " I could consider doing a portrait of both of you at home. I'd envision you both on the sofa each reading your medical journals and marking (post it notes) those articles to keep or those of interest to the other. Of course you nowadays would be reading these on iPad or KindleFire and e-mailing bookmarks or articles, but magazines work better in a portrait." That got me to thinking of Simon's "Dangling Conversation". (Though I must say I don't see what is incompatible about "and you read your Emily Dickenson and I my Robert Frost" since I rather like both of these poets.)
Undangling Conversationby Pam Green , © 2013(to tune of Paul Simon's "Dangling Conversation")It's a portrait in acrylicsOf a weekend afternoon : The windows Wyeth curtained, Chiaroscuro fills the room. As we sit and read our journals, In mutual awareness, Contented calmness reigns, Twenty years of joys and pains. As I read upon my iPad And you your Kindle Fire, Sending bookmarks to each other That the other might desire. Like a symphony well written Our partnership is harmony And pleasing counterpoint ; Our lives are well in joint, As this silent conversation And fond glances of our eyes Expand the borders of our lives. |
