It occurred to me that one might revise the Buddy Holly classic "Peggy Sue Got Married" into "Peggy And Sue Got Married" . so I looked up the lyrics and they needed almost no change at all.

A dear friend seemed a bit disappointed that there was no male couple in my first draft, so I've added Adam and Steve (French and Quebecois readers may prefer Adam and Yves) and, in balance, Ada and Eve.

And of course I had to add verses about the DOMA decisions. UNITED STATES v. WINDSOR, EXECUTOR OF THE ESTATE OF SPYER, ET AL. and reerence to the Prop 8 non-decision decision that leaves California Prop 8 invalidated , HOLLINGSWORTH ET AL. v. PERRY ET AL

I freely give permission for anyone to sing this at their wedding or at a Gay Pride event or at any similar occasion. If you want to work your own name and that of your beloved in, you've got my blessings..

Supreme Court ruled much as I had guessed ;
I just heard it on the evening news :
DOMA's dead and so's Prop 8
(all despite much right wing hate ;
probably they'll never understand) .
The Widow Winsor, Edith, had been greatly wronged,
And for simple fairness she had greatly longed :
She was most unfairly taxed ;
Equality was all she'd asked .
The Internal Revenue she sued some ago.
The ruling is plain (don't say that I told you so) :
Edith and Thea were married quite long ago.

Sappho of course is the original "Lesbian" (because born on Lesbos circa 600 BC)..(see or example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sappho) She was considered the greatest bard (singer poet) of the classic era, called the "Tenth Muse" by Plato. Little of her life is known and little of her verse survives. What does survive shows her to have loved women and men, and she had a daughter (which implies some male participation). But the term "lesbian" today means a woman who loves women, often implying exclusively so .

Alcaeus, also spelled Alkaios , was Sappho's contemporary , also born on Lesbos and also an accomplished bard. (see for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcaeus_of_Mytilene) His love songs are reputed to have celebrated his love of beautiful young men, though he also seems to have had some involvements with women , possibly including Sappho. (But the term "lesbian" seems never to be applied to men who love men. There does not seem to be any equivalent term, ie a non-perjorative term for gay men (ie men but not women), so far as I am aware.)

The DOMA ruling, for those of you who have been living on some other planet, had as its instigating issue the federal inheritance tax levied against widow Edith Winsor after the death of her legally married (in New York state) spouse Thea Spyer. The ruling was that same sex couples who were married in a state recognizing or authorizing such marriages are entitled to the same federal benefits and subject to the same duties as other legally married couples, thus over-ruling the most egregiously offfensive portions of DOMA.

The Prop 8 ruling declined to rule on the merits of the case as the defenders of Prop 8 were ruled to" lack standing" to sue/defend. This left intact and controlling the earlier District Court ruling that invalidated Prop 8, thus making same-sex marriages again available and legal in California. It does not affect any state other than California. There are now over a dozen states that recognize same-sex marriage on equal basis with woman-and-man marriage.

Update 2015

The Supreme Court ruled in June 2015 in OBERGEFELL ET AL v HODGES that the 14th Amendment requires that same-sex marriage must be allowed in all states and that all states must give full faith and credit to marriages legally contracted in other states.

The Court's reasoning was similar to that I have given in DOMA and California's Prop 8 but they said so at much much greater length.
