I wrote this some years ago. Very much influenced by Edna St Vincent Millay and Dorothy Parker . I think it has since been used at the memorial services for one of our local rescue people.

The dogs mourn a rescuer

by Pam Green , © 2010

All dogs and bitches now must howl :
Our rescuer is dead,
Who gave us bones and luscious meat
When we but begged for bread.

Who taught us all the house-dog arts,
Who quelled soul's fear and strife,
Who gave us love and leadership
When we but begged for life.
