Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

Should We Really Have Electronic Shoes?

'Technology' is creating a battery-powered footwear system
Designed to act similarly to an 'e-bike on your feet.'
In other words, bionic sneakers which use sensors and motors,
Propelling runners and walkers to function with less effort.
3D-printed titanium leg shells attached to the shoes,
Are where the motors and sensors 'learn' the wearer's gait.
Even the laces automatically adjust for a proper fit!
All this customizing is accomplished with a smart phone app.
Those who have tested them, find them light and fashionable.
Benefits come from embedded sensor modules,
Which reduce fatigue and injury risk.
The shoes are totally recyclable at the end of life.
With 'vibrotactile ticklers,' users can navigate, phone-free.
This footwear has also evolved to track GPS,
Temperature, and its use in search and rescue.
It can also be utilized with Alzheimer's patients
To monitor their presence in safe zones.
Boots use sensors to detect balance loss
And pending falls in less than 150 milliseconds.
The motorized attachments are able
To increase walking speed by 250%--
I wonder how that will go over in the Olympics!
Well, here is yet another breakthrough and discovery,
Which will undoubtedly create
Yet more law suits in the sports world.
