Poems and Thoughts    by Frank Maurer

[Return to Poems and Thoughts index page]

The Fate of the Sporran.

I have traced my ancestry back to the first kings of Scotland.
I read about and learned Scottish history and the tragedies
With which they had to cope.
The English Crown also banned the tartan or kilt worn by Scots.
This meant that the complete costume,
Including the sporran, was forbidden.
The sporran is the pouch or bag hung over the groin area.
It was utilized because the kilt had no pockets.

A modern ban has been placed on at least part of that costume.
When flying with a kilt the TSA would not allow the sporran to be worn.
This caused inconvenience and a sort of shaming of the Scottish garb.
After some discussion, this second ban,
As with the first, was benevolently lifted.
Now the TSA might just peek in the little sack to satisfy their concerns.
