These pages describe how to use the DCN "Personal" Search Engine to allow visitors to search your personal or organizational World Wide Web pages located on the DCN.

Quick Start

Quick Start to index all your HTML files:

  1. Log in to your DCN account on wheel.
  2. Go to the UNIX shell if your account opens to the DCN menu.
  3. Change to your public_html directory (cd public_html).
  4. Type index on the command line.
  5. Choose y when asked if you want instructions (this will create some sample files).
  6. Your files are now indexed.
  7. Four files were created in the directory you ran index (see below).

Files created after following the steps above:

  1. xxxxx.index (where "xxxxx" is your login ID) - this is the index file itself, and is created every time you run the index program.
  2. search-samples.html - this file contains several examples of WWW forms you can use to search your web pages. This files is created when you choose y when asked if you want instructions.
  3. sample-header.xhtml - this is an example of a "custom" header. This files is created when you choose y when asked if you want instructions.
  4. sample-footer.xhtml - this is an example of a "custom" footer. This files is created when you choose y when asked if you want instructions.

Note: Only files with the extensions ".html", ".htm", and ".txt" are indexed.

The DCN "Personal" Search Engine is based on a slightly modified version of swish by Kevin Hughes and heavily modified version of swishgate by Dave Disser. Adaptation, modification, and tweaking for DCN was performed by Jason Coffer.
